Jubal's Womb

When Granny Crow sent her grandson away from the mountains to save his life from the wrath of a gun-toting husband she warned him that he couldn't keep doing the doctor work she had taught him to do.

"City doctors got to have a license," she warned.

But had she known how the Boulder City women would welcome the young mountain doctor, and how he would tangle with the police and county prosecutor, she might have taken her chances with the angry husband.

Fifty years ago I started a rumor in my barbershop by telling one of my customers a big, fat lie. I did it because this client always had a ready stock of wild stories, so I decided to go him one better. What I did was take a true story that had made national headlines and embellished it, then twisted it, and stirred it up a little until I had a big, juicy lie. Basically, I just wanted to see how gullible this particular customer was. Well, he became so excited by the lie that he kept pressing me for more details so I was forced to keep making up additional lies. When I refused to give him the location of the place I was lying about he left in a huff. Right after that I started getting a lot of his fellow workers as clients, and they all hinted that they would provide a large tip if I would just tell them how to find the place.
The lie I told that first day was about "Jubal's Womb" and I let fifty years go by before I put it down on paper.
